Occasional black/blank screen.

Hey there, I'm running lmde amd64 and am having an occasional black, or blank, screen issue. Pretty sure it's an xorg related issue.

Symptoms, on boot grub will come up fine... the grub spash screen will come up fine, then once the kernel boots I get the traditional 80x40 screen, and then there's a transition to a different resolution and font that my laptop doesn't handle well. (Sorry, don't know the terms for these transitions... I usually don't use X)

It works one out of three times, so it's an annoyance but can be dealt with by rebooting several times. Once it's passed this phase it's usually pretty stable, with the occasional wake from sleep failing.

Forgive me, I use a ton of server stuff but just recently started with the needing a GUI part.

Hardware is a Dell e5410 using a i915 chipset.

So after watching this for a couple of days I'm thinking this is the backlight issue.

Okay, Internet says that some kernel versions have the issue while other kernel versions don't. Figured I'd update the kernel before rebuilding it with a patch, new kernel works fine now.

2.6.32-5-amd64 has the backlight issue.
2.6.38-2-amd64 does NOT have the issue.

Problem solved.
