dist-upgrade and initramfs-tools

Postby jetblack on Mon Jul 25, 2011 3:40 am

Hi all

First I am not using the new method or repos for upgrading.

I am also not sure if this is the corect place to report this - there maybe a bugs section that I havnt seen.

I have just done a dist-upgrade and all is well apart from an error message about initramfs-tools and it not being able to generate /boot/initrd.img-2.6.39-2-amd6. It reports that there it cannot stat /lib/libacl* no such file or directory. This results in a update-initramfs failed report.

Should I be worried ??

cheers

is this the error you get

So, it looks like it's crashing in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/live. I searched for the package that contains the file /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/live and found that it belongs to live-initramfs:

Code: Select all
dpkg -S /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/live
live-initramfs: /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/live

What does live-initramfs do? Do I need it?

Code: Select all
aptitude show live-initramfs
Package: live-initramfs
State: installed
Automatically installed: no
Version: 1.236.2-1
Priority: optional
Section: misc
Maintainer: Debian Live Project <debian-live@lists.debian.org>
Uncompressed Size: 512 k
Depends: busybox, file, initramfs-tools, sudo, udev, user-setup
Recommends: cryptsetup, eject, rsync, uuid-runtime, wget
Suggests: loop-aes-utils, curlftpfs, genext2fs (>= 1.4.1), httpfs2,
          squashfs-tools, mtd-tools, unionfs-fuse
Description: Debian Live initramfs hook
live-initramfs is a hook for the initramfs-tools, used to generate a initramfs
capable to boot live systems, such as those created by live-helper. This
includes the Debian Live isos, netboot tarballs, and usb stick images.

At boot time it will look for a (read-only) media containing a "/live"
directory where a root filesystems (often a compressed filesystem image like
squashfs) is stored. If found, it will create a writable environment, using
aufs or unionfs, for Debian like systems to boot from.

You probably do not want to install this package onto a non-live system,
although it will do no harm.

Nop, I don't need it. After removing the package, all is well again.

Hi zerozero

Thanks for answering.

Setting up initramfs-tools (0.99) ...
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.39-2-686-pae
cp: cannot stat `/lib/libacl*': No such file or directory
E: /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/live failed with return 1.
update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.39-2-686-pae with 1.
dpkg: error processing initramfs-tools (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
initramfs-tools

That looks pretty much like it.

Nop, I don't need it. After removing the package, all is well again.

So I guess you are saying I dont need it as well.
