Two freezes|crashes in a day

Post by delinquent »

I had Two freeze|crashes in a day. that's never happened to me before on LMDE. Before this I could have it run for a week or more till I initiated a restart.
sources.list:
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ squeeze-backports iceweasel-beta

How can I solve this? I would like to continue using LMDE
Thanks

Not sure what your problem is.

However, one thing I noted is you have ubuntu ppa mixing in Debian based distros.
Many people who run Debian distros would not want to have ubuntu ppa because of possible conflict.
All my Debian distros have only Debian repos. and very stable, including those tracking Sid.
My suggestion is similar to those running Debian distros: do not mix repos !.

The ppa which I've used for a long time is only for installing avant window navigator (awn), so it shouldn't cause any problems.

I meant repository and not ppa. didn't delete it if I understand what you've asked.
All the freezes happened when working on firefox. Is it the culprit.. I mean can cause the whole system to freeze - mouse is working or more precisely I can move it but not more than that.

yeahh firefox can do that, in 2 ways (at least, that i know)
- flash (11 beta is behaving a lot better than 10.3)
- using all (or near) ram - depends on the kind of usage you have: how many tabs, heavy flash-based sites? (just to give you an idea, in my system, with my surfing habits, firefox+plugin-container can go to near 1GiB)

I had another crash a few hours ago. it happened when I tried to watch a flash video on youtube using firefox.
My Shockwave Flash version is 11.0 d1. I installed it from the repo.
Assuming that flash is the cause of the freezes, my question is how does it happen?
I know that in newer version of firefox, plugins work in a "sandbox" so if there' a problem only the plugin crashes and not the browser.
In my case it crashes the whole system which is supposed to be the most stable of them all.
Very disturbing and frustrating.

i can't open the attached file with dmesg log you posted in the first post (gives me a encoding error), but anyway:
- what are the specs of your comp? aren't you trying to run more than your system allows?
- do you have swap? it's active?
- try chromium  and see if the issues still persist

In addition to what has been written,,,
Sometimes, ad-ons have an adverse effect on firefox. Try disabling them one at a time to see which one causes you the problem.

If you suspect firefox, then fire up Firefox (may have to use -safe-mode from terminal) and open a new tab, type in about:crashes to view crash report(s).

Hi, my system is also freezing, except it can happen several times in a day. The problem appears to happen randomly except for the fact that it doesn't happen while I'm actally typing. But after the computer has been idle for a bit (and before any screensaver is close to being activated), it can freeze completely.

@delinquent -- did you determine whether FF was the cause or not? For my part, I can confirm that the cause of my freezes is not any of the following, which I'd suspected at one time or another: Firefox, Thunderbird; logitech lapdesk, keyboard, mouse.

I'm beginning to wonder whether the problem is with xorg (I have xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.2.15.0-3 installed), but am not sure how to go about troubleshooting. See http://pastebin.com/4fgDVxGX for dmesg output. Is any other info required? I'm a relative noob, so all guidance and help is appreciated! Many thanks.

Can also confirm that my crashes are not due to wireless (just had a crash with wifi turned off on ethernet).

@delinquent - are you still having freezes? any more troubleshooting info for them?

Versions of Firefox higher than 3.6 hang badly.
The higher number versions if anything are worse.
It is the number one problem reported to Firefox.
I have tried every version from 4.0 to 7.0 and only downgrading to 3.6 solved the problem.
