Login Screen & Root

I've just tried to get into the Login Screen, from within the Control Centre. When I tried to "unlock" the padlock the Authenticate Dialogue did not appear. Is this a Bug? I also note that you can't log on as Root either, surely this must be a bug as well?

Apart from a few teething problems I'm really liking LMDE, I'm running with the latest RC 201108 Gnome and have the 64 bit version on my Sony VAIO and 32 bit on a neighbours old Dell laptop. (With my neighbour, she keeps her computer on a desk at home and has only her account so there is really no need to have a log in dialogue.)

Can anyone help me please, have I missed something?

I'm not sure about the root account on LMDE. I'm assuming it has your initial password. Can you use:

To become root from the terminal?

I've tried to log in as Root with my password but it throws me out! In the terminal with the su command my password gets me in. So I can't GUI with Root.

Is this what your need?
LMDE auto login

gksu gedit /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf

and underneath
[daemon]
Add the next lines:

[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=your username

Yes thank you. that will do it. It is just a shame the GUI isn't working.

I just installed the newest update package 3 in LMDE incoming, just went to the Logon Screen in the Menu and tried to use the GUI, it seems to be working for me since the install.

I was a military logistic specialist for 22yrs, seems to make me pretty good at guessing what people need and remembering were to find it. Kind of thinking in fuzzy logic.

To answer your second question, LMDE is different from Mint main edition. Login as root is not possible in LMDE because there is no user "root". As far as I know, right clicking a folder and selecting "Open as administrator" or using sudo or sudo su to gain temporary root privileges are the only choices you have got.

This is not true. The default installation doesn't allow root GUI login. It can be hacked to allow it. Being able to do this is one of the reasons I'm switching over to Mint from Ubuntu.
