Packages available in Debian but not LMDE?

Post by Konstigt »

Hello

After getting tired with Ubuntu/Unity I'm switching to Linux Mint. Not sure which version though, regular or LMDE.

For example, in LMDE, I could not find package vpnc and network-manager-vpnc. Both of these are available in Debian though. What is the reason for this?

Another example, chromium-browser.

Thanks,

Konstigt

hi,
can you please do an apt-cache policy with your LMDE system
amadeu@lmde-test ~ $ apt-cache policy vpnc
vpnc:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 0.5.3r449-2.1
Version table:
0.5.3r449-2.1 0
500 http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ testing/main amd64 Packages
amadeu@lmde-test ~ $ apt-cache policy chromium-browser
chromium-browser:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 13.0.782.220~r99552-1
Version table:
13.0.782.220~r99552-1 0
500 http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ testing/main amd64 Packages
amadeu@lmde-test ~ $
and show us the output of

Code: Select all

No sorry, I don't have any installed system and I was booted from a Live USB when I checked. I figure that all repositories wasn't enabled then since it works on your installed system...?

Also, why did my searches on http://packages.linuxmint.com/ not return these packages?

Search package directories:
Keyword: vpnc
Release: Linxu Mint Debian Section: Any

(No results found)

The search-site seems a bit crippled compared to Debian/Ubuntu's ditos.

LMDE draws most of its packages from the Debian testing repos, or if you are using the new Latest/Incoming repos http://debian.linuxmint.com. There are only about a hundred or so packages in packages.linuxmint.com, whereas you'll find about 30,000 in the Debian testing repo.

no worries :D
1- let's see, first thing first: the linuxmint repo has the mint specific pkgs, so you won't find in there all you are looking for;
2- even with the live session you could check those pkgs we were talking about, but anyway i think i know why they show in debian testing and not in your sources.list:
- most probably you installed the newest iso (201108) and that one is not following testing, but the new update-packs, more about that here http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1781 and here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... t=+testers , basically this means you are running a snapshot of the testing repo (which is known to be stable and reliable) and in a couple weeks you will get a new snapshot that we hope will be as well stable and reliable (at least we try  )
- now, the issue comes because testing is always changing and pkgs enter and leave every day, so this kind of thing can happen)
3- your options? either wait for the next update-pack (if you need a reliable system) or change to testing and join the crazy boat

Thanks for you replies! I will read those links right away.

I think I will like being a LMDE user instead of a Ubuntu-user, I have a good feeling about this :)
