can't reinstall gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

Postby ERwan on Thu Jan 19, 2012 2:25 pm

Hi.
Once again, I've done a mistake!
I've uninstalled "gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg" package, which Synaptic said to be obsolete. And now I can't read .avi files!

So I've tried to reinstall it, but when I try to select it for installation, synaptic says :
Code: Select all
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:
Dépend : libavcodec52 (<5:0) mais 5:0.6.3-0.0 doit être installé ou
libavcodec-extra-52 (<5:0) mais ne peut être installé

My translation :
Code: Select all
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:
Depends : libavcodec52 (<5:0) but 5:0.6.3-0.0 must be installed or
libavcodec-extra-52 (<5:0) but can not be installed

So what can I do ?

Which Debian repository are you using? libavcodec52 is in the Stable repository; the Testing and Unstable repositories both have libavcodec53. You can find advice elsewhere on the forum about how to enable different repositories.

Synaptic's "obsolete" list is best ignored, in my view; it is a mystery how it is determined.

Just try installing libavcodec52. You should then be able to reinstall gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg.

Although I think synaptic is the best program the linux world has ever written, I still don't trust it 100%. In particular I never trust it to remove anything that it says is 'obsolete' because it sometimes gets it wrong - and so does 'deborphan' its command line equivalent.

Thanks guys.
I'll remember not to trust "obsolete" packages in the future.

@Brian49, I already have "libavcodec52" installed.

Ah interesting. Brian49's post is correct, libavcodec53 is the current version in 'Testing' although I actually have both installed (which is why synaptic thinks the 52 version is obsolete - and in this case it may be correct). However it is the '53' version that is the dependency of gstreamer not the 52 version. So the question for you is do you have the '53' version installed? If not then install it then try gstreamer again.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, it didn't work.

I've installed "libavcodec53", (and these dependences : "libvo-aacenc0", "libvo-amrwbenc0"). Then I've tried to install "gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg" again, but I had the same message again :
Code: Select all
    gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:
Depends : libavcodec52 (<5:0) but 5:0.6.3-0.0 must be installed or
libavcodec-extra-52 (<5:0) but can not be installed

I've checked "gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg" properties : it talks about this dependency : "libavcodec52 (>=4:0.6-1~) | libavcodec-extra-52". Nothing explicitly mentions the 53 version.

By the way, what is the meaning of "but 5:0.6.3-0.0 must be installed" ?
- Is it "but you have to install 5:0.6.3-0.0",
- or "but 5:0.6.3-0.0 is probably installed (which is not good)"

That is interesting, this is what it says for me:

Code: Select all
Package: gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
Priority: optional
Section: libs
Installed-Size: 380
Maintainer: Christian Marillat <marillat@debian.org>
Architecture: amd64
Source: gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg-dmo
Version: 1:0.10.12-0.0
Depends: libavcodec53 (>= 5:0.8.3), libavformat53 (>= 5:0.8.3), libavutil51 (>= 5:0.8.3), libc6 (>= 2.7), libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.24.0), libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0 (>= 0.10.31), libgstreamer0.10-0 (>= 0.10.31), liborc-0.4-0 (>= 1:0.4.14), libpostproc51 (>= 5:0.8.3), libswscale2 (>= 5:0.8.3)
Filename: pool/main/g/gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg-dmo/gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg_0.10.12-0.0_amd64.deb

So which version of gstreamer are you trying to install?
You might also look through the list of other dependencies and see if any of those are missing from your system.

This is mine:
Code: Select all
apt-cache policy gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:
  Installed: 1:0.10.12-0.0
  Candidate: 1:0.10.12-0.0

Edit.
The part about versions of libavcodec is confusing I grant you, but what is not confusing is this:
Depends : libavcodec52 (<5:0)

Which is saying that the version of gstreamer that you are trying to install needs a version of libavcodec52 less than version 5.0 but the version you have installed or alternatively the version that is available to install, is higher than version 5.0.

I landed in the same boat as you ERwan, and after trying everything, ended up re-installing LMDE (XFCE). The re-install worked. This time, just after the install, I changed my sources.list before updating. Remove all security and multimedia repositories from your sources.list (they are now incorporated into the main linuxmint repository), remove gstreamer...really-bad using Synaptic or the console, then update. All is well.

Here's my libavcodec52 conundrum ((64 bit) Distro Linux Mint Xfce Edition), i see this for the first time following a dist-upgrade (19may2012):
The following packages have been kept back:
libavcodec52

so what's the problem?:
>sudo apt-get install libavcodec52
...
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libavcodec52 : Depends: libx264-118 (>= 3:0.118.2085+git8a62835) but it is not installable

who's demanding this (old?) thing anyway?:
>sudo apt-cache rdepends libavcodec52
Reverse Depends:
libavformat52
libquicktime1
libavformat52
libavfilter1
libavdevice52
ffmpeg

but i've got none of those installed(!)...?
>dpkg -l libavformat52 libquicktime1 libavfilter1 libavdevice52 ffmpeg
...
rc ffmpeg 7:0.10.3-dmo1 audio/video encoder, streaming server & audio/video file converter.
rc libavformat52 5:0.7.1-0.1 ffmpeg file format library
rc libquicktime1 3:1.2.2-0.3squeeze1 library for reading and writing Quicktime files
No packages found matching libavfilter1.
No packages found matching libavdevice52.

i'm probably missing something obvious here. any clues would be greatly appreciated - thankee!

yeahh, i saw that here http://pastebin.com/6J2QPseF
personally i think debian-multimedia can a PITA some times: libavcodec52 and libavformat52 should be replaced with *53
http://www.deb-multimedia.org/dists/tes ... bavcodec52
http://www.deb-multimedia.org/dists/tes ... bavcodec53
http://www.deb-multimedia.org/dists/tes ... avformat52
http://www.deb-multimedia.org/dists/tes ... avformat53
and on top of all, this ffmpeg update (from D-Mult) breaks libav-tools (from debian proper)

well in the end i had to uninstall both *52, can't see any difference.

I use debian-multimedia.org for most of my multimedia packages including vlc, mplayer, ffmpeg. Have never ran into any issues.

Packages show up as "obsolete" in Synaptic if they are not in the repos in your sources.list. When that happens there is usually a newer version, libx264 is one example that gets left behind when a new version comes out. Packages that you manually download and install also show up as obsolete, so know what you are removing.

You can also do:
aptitude show ~o
to see what packages are listed as obsolete.

resolution of my zombie libavcodec52 problem (which kept insisting to be part of an dist-upgrade that it couldn't complete - "..have been kept back") the solution was that libmjpegtools-1.9, of all things, had its toe on a libavcodec52 dependency which i managed to miss.

soo... finally a mere:
    sudo dpkg --purge libquicktime1 libavcodec52 libmjpegtools-1.9
and no more broken packages, (but for ..how... long??)
thankee folks.
