201403 Custom Grub Background Image

Postby Trapper on Thu Mar 06, 2014 1:16 pm

--- I am posting this here because I have no idea where else it should go ---

I am having difficulty displaying a custom grub menu background image in LMDE. I use the image in LM 13 okay but cannot use the same procedure in LMDE to get the image to display.

In LM13 I simply edit /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme (06_mint_theme is disabled). At the "# Next try to use the background image and colors specified by desktop-base." section I have:

Code: Select all
WALLPAPER="/boot/grub/background/Grub-Cats-1024x768.png"
COLOR_NORMAL="white/black"
COLOR_HIGHLIGHT="red/black"
if set_background_image "${WALLPAPER}" "${COLOR_NORMAL}" "${COLOR_HIGHLIGHT}"; then
   exit 0
fi

My image and desired font colors are displayed at the grub menu screen.

In LMDE this procedure does not work. The image path IS correct. The image IS there. If I edit the /05_debian_theme as above, save it and run sudo update-grub (06_mint_theme is disabled) the output of the update does not show the image as found and it also does not display at the grub menu.

What's different with 201403 when it comes to having a grub menu background?

/etc/default/grub
Code: Select all
GRUB_BACKGROUND="/boot/grub/background/Grub-Cats-1024x768.png

followed by 'update-grub' command

Didn't mention it but I already tried that and it also failed.

I also tried simply placing the image in /boot/grub and running sudo update-grub. That doesn't find the image either.
