I love LMDE, but I don't really like the green folder icons in the menu and the panel. The rest of the Mint-X icons, though, are fine and I'd like to keep them.
Is there an alternative version of the Mint-X icon theme, a bit like Mint-X Colors for the gtk theme? Or other options?

You can simply find a folder icon you like and replace the one from Mint-X with our. That way you would keep the nice icons and have a better folder icon.

Code: Select all
/usr/share/icons/Mint-X/places

You can change to different icons with System Settings > Themes > Other Settings > Icons
There are several ways to get new icons:
1) From the Mint repository using Synaptic.
I prefer the Neu icons, found in the gnome-themes-extras package. There are many more in the repository, such as
human-theme
human-icon-theme
humanity-icon-theme
gnome-human-icon-theme
gnome-colors
gnome-wine-icon-theme
gnome-wise-icon-theme
gnome-brave (blue)
2) If you want to download and install other icon sets, the first step is to make an .icons folder
CODE: SELECT ALL
mkdir /home/user/.icons
Download and copy new icon sets into that folder.
You can find more icon sets here:
http://gnome-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=120x121
http://www.deviantart.com/?q=icons
http://www.noobslab.com/2011/11/themes- ... html#icons
3) If you are artistically inclined, make your own icon sets.
4) Install gextractwinicons with Synaptic. gExtractWinIcons can extract cursors and icons from MS Windows compatible
resource files (like .exe, .dll, .ocx, .cpl).

Re: Great icons, but... green...
Actually what I'm trying to do is replace ALL of the green items in the default icon set and theme. The default "Linux Mint" theme in Cinnamon is great, but the Mint-X GTK (used for the controls) uses green everywhere.
I was able to replace the folder icons, but the GTK is not as easy to deal with... I could really use a WYSIWYG editor!
Well, thanks anyway. I'll keep trying.

You are right "GTK is not as easy to deal with".
If you want to tackle the GTK, here are the tutorials, (which can be applied to LMDE):
