I just wanna put up a warning for anyone who might try to begin updating GNOME components to the 3.6 versions beginning to enter Experimental...

*DON'T* do it!

Doing so will result in GNOME and its related components being completely unusable.

This is despite being able to mark all of the current updates for installation without any breakages or conflicts.

I figured I'd warn people against it before they end up in the same situation I just did.

EDIT: I suspect it's probably because Clutter updates to 3.6, while Mutter is still 3.4 (and Muffin, no doubt, is at a comparable version...)

I would think this sage advice. Experience from the update from 3.0 to 3.2 to 3.4 would indicate that it is pointless updating anything until the gnome-shell package is updated. Just guessing, but it seems the devs leave the shell package to last so when it updates then the whole package is ready to go.

I have the Status of Gnome 3.6 page in my favourites and check it regularly waiting for the time to roll. I also follow Debian on Google + where they make update and progress announcements.

I could have sworn the transition from 3.2 to 3.4 went a lot more smoothly, I recall regularly updating most components as they showed up without any serious consequences... Then again, I also remember the package manager wanting to remove a lot more packages when something just wasn't ready yet, and rightly avoided installing/updating the packages that triggered the removal request. I guess for now I'll just have to watch and wait, and once more things are in place it may be safe to start updating again.

Well--I'm currently 61 out of 178 packages towards 3.6 No compatibility problems as of yet....all looking good.

Does anyone here have a working vanilla(ish) Gnome 3.6 install? Neither fedora 18 pre-releases nor the the recent Gnome 3.6 live iso (based on fedora) will install for me. I have Gnome 3.6 on Ubuntu 12.10 but it's a few major Gnome 3.6 elements (gdm etc.) from being vanilla.

There is a "custom" Gnome3 install made by the Gnome3 group in Ubuntu--- http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/ubuntu-g ... eased.html

You will still need to run 3 PPA's (so use the "normal" way to get them in Ubuntu) I've got it running on one of my partitions---User themes are a bit spotty & most of the extensions do not work right now, so I've kept with my Experimental Debian install for day-to-day use....I'm still using some precise sources due to things not being available for quantal yet...there have been several updates since this was released, so the look is far more Gnome than Ubuntu....It is using the current GDM (I like the looks!!) & the new Nautilus works very nice....

Cheers, autocrosser - I should have mentioned that I had tried that one as well :)

fedora 18 pre-release gets me to fedora's new at this point super buggy installer and no further
gnome 3.6 live iso and Ubuntu Gnome Remix just don't agree with my graphics card, all I get is a white screen

Anyway, I'll have a go the one you linked to again!

You could try a custom kernel line to get your vid card to work---I needed -no modereset to get past the no screen problem with my SLI Nvidia card set..... Got me in long enough to use Jockey to get the driver blob.....

when you get to the boot menu, I believe that it is F5 & you can choose special kernel options....

3.6 almost there in experimental, a handful of packages and it will run.

Dig the new lock screen (it will throw the anti-tablet crowd into a collective tantrum). Don't dig that the view tab buttons were replaced with a grid icon and put in the favourites bar, it was better before. Otherwise things running smoothly looking great.

This is getting interesting... It looks like most of the necessary packages are there, but there must be a few things missing yet since I can't yet mark gnome-shell for upgrade without Synaptic throwing a bit of a fit...

Gonna be sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation of being able to upgrade everything soon...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

It runs.

I used Synaptic running under Xfce and removed most of Gnome. I renamed my ~/home/greg/.local/share/gnome-shell to gnome-shell.old then I opened up experimental and sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

I am now running a plain Gnome 3.6

You probably do not need to remove the old Gnome other than the extensions, but I am just cautious.

Now to customize.

I noticed when I clicked "Mark All Upgrades" in Synaptic it actually marked everything nicely, only package in the list that didn't get marked for update is the desktop data package (which makes sense since most of the apps are still GNOME 3.4). I'm gonna wait until I get home and make a backup before I actually install them, hopefully they'll install without a fuss. GTK3 was killing my graphical environment altogether previously, hopefully now that more components are available to update alongside it I won't have that trouble.

It is early days for 3.6 in experimental. At the moment nautilus is un-installable. I have Thunar to use instead.

There will be other things I have not found yet. Some of my own python programs will not run.

Take care.

Edit: A few hours of playing and themes work by adding themes extension and I am using "Shine". There are only 8 pages for 3.6, so far, on extensions.gnome.org. I fixed my Python issues with a few selected updates. Weather app was installed from

https://github.com/canek-pelaez/gnome-s ... on-weather

Now all I need is to get Nautilus back and a window switcher.

Nautilus from GNOME 3.4 still works fine here... GTK 3.6 kills GDM, GNOME Shell and Cinnamon (not sure about XFCE since I can't log into it without GDM working, don't know how to switch the session X uses from the console...). Just got a couple clutter-gtk updates that might make a difference, gonna backup again before I re-test installing GTK3 updates... Also noting that GNOME Shell themes need working on, some things have changed and new things have been added, the old themes *mostly* work but there are a few flaws to iron out...

I am liking this though, I needed something to do with my themes, and this is perfect.

EDIT: A couple other things to note, Cinnamon still works (without GTK3 updated...), but the new lock screen doesn't work with Cinnamon, so Cinnamon can't lock the screen anymore (not that *I* mind, I don't lock it anyway, but some people might care...)
