pure Debian/ LMDE gtk issue - interesting challenge?

I'm wondering if anyone here with an interest in theming/ gtk might be able to solve this. Here's a link to a thread in a Debian forum I've posted. I don't know if it's permanent, but I've been using pure Debian 6.01 on one of my computers for a week, and my custom gtkrc-2.0 file isn't quite doing its job now.
