Seriously - I had to get it out. This really shows how far lmde has come.

I recently got a new rig (four instead of one cpu cores 8 instead of 1 gig ram etc) so I thought - what the hey - I can shoulder some ubuntu bloat and with gnome 3 hitting the repos lmde might have a rough patch ahead of itself - or one with few updates possibly.

So I went back to the main edition after like a year of tracking testing on lmde (with two updateless weeks on incoming at the end) - and you know what?
I have issues that I never had on lmde.

I think I have to configure another sound drive because changing volume is somewhat choppy and sometimes one or both gnome panels just don't show up and i have to "killall gnome-panel" after logging in before I'm able to use the whole desktop the way I like it.

The only issue I remember having on lmde (besides a somewhat idiosyncratic pulse-audio setup I just HAD to have ) was that one lib (forgot the name) for font rendering that was imported from ubuntu preventing the install of some dev libraries I wanted - pinned that to the debian version and all was good. (don't care much about oh-so-pretty fonts)

Now I'm on main edition. okay I can use ubuntu ppas but I realized i really don't need any. Oh and I have pretty fonts and panel issues

What I wanted to say: Keep up the good work on lmde - I expect I'll be back soon. For me it is still THE linux desktop distro.

I'm using both LMDE and Ubuntu-based at the moment. For whatever reason, I just seem to get a little bit better video streaming experience on the Ubuntu-based. But LMDE definitely seems to be the more stable of the two.

You didn't have to go back "to the dark side" just for that. Just point your repos at LATEST and wait for Update Pack 4! The WHOLE idea of introducing the Update Pack mirrors was to "buffer" end users from all such turmoil whilst still giving the 'essence' of a rolling release.

On some systems I use them, on some I don't , but, they have achieved exactly what was intended. If you need/want certain apps beyond the UP delays (eg Firefox), then 'apt pinning' Unstable/Sid on top of Latest is the way to go.

Seriously, LMDE has become a rock solid, stable as you like, doddle of a 'rolling' release to use! Would expect nothing less from Clem.

By the way---Gnome 3.2 has JUST hit "Expermintal" this weekend....so you won't miss any G-S goodness Time to come back home......

Yeah but waiting for update pack 4 was what I meant with "few updates" - actually when the new repos got introduced I imagined incoming as a bit livlier

@autocrosser: been playing with gnome 3.2 and gnome shell a little on my distrohopping partition - needs A LOT more extensions before I can consider that as a daily desktop environment.Frankly when trying out ubuntu 11.10 I found myself wanting to replace both unity and gnome-shell with a standalone compiz session with awd behaving almost like the two panel gnome2 setup

@edit: lazyness will probably keep me around main edition just to see what mint12 will look like - after that it's back to lmde
