im running a debian sid/ linux mint gloria system. the only package i was not able to install was the mint-meta-main. my question though is....i can not get the usplash-theme-mint to run. everything is installed. i just don't know if there is any other configuring i need to do.
apt-get install linux-mint-debian-edition

I believe you need to get Startup-Manager.

have it installed. the debian version doesnt give all the options like the ubuntu version.
apt-get install linux-mint-debian-edition

I wasn't too familiar with the Debian version since I have never used it before. Sorry I couldn't help you more. You may want to try Google and see if you can find a how-to on your specific situation. Good luck.

yea not too many have wandered the path of linux mint with debian instead of ubuntu.
apt-get install linux-mint-debian-edition

got it working with that how-to. its just not displaying the .so correctly.
apt-get install linux-mint-debian-edition
