Those are exactly the errors I would expect to get if its apt-get cannot connect to the Internet. Maybe the port is blocked? What is the output of

Code: Select all
cat /etc/apt/sources.list

I read that and it only refrences VLC. I can't beleive that the only thing in the debian-multimedia repo is VLC. I do understand what the post is saying though, and if I run into problems with VLC then I will work around them.

However, this doesn't explain why I can't reach the debian-multimedia, or linuxmint repos.

tec_wiz,
I had your same problem with debian multimedia repository and have solved following the link I gave.
For the other problems post your sources.list as requested.

The reason this fixes the debian-multimedia repo issue is because the link tells you to remove that repository from your sources list. This does not solve my problem, only removes the problem. I would like to be able to use the debian-multimedia repo if I am supposed to use it.

I do appreciate the help though.

Not to be a party pooper but VLC is not in the debian-multimedia.org repo it is in the main Debian repos.

$ apt-cache policy vlc
vlc:
Installed: 1.1.4-1
Candidate: 1.1.4-1
Version table:
*** 1.1.4-1 0
101 http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ experimental/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
1.1.3-1 0
500 http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ sid/main i386 Packages

The VLC thread really only applies to Stable, very people running Testing have had issues using the dmm repo. While I do not know of anyone that has issues with vlc in sid.

Now back on topic, can you post your /etc/resolv.conf

Also check /etc/apt/apt.conf it should either be empty or it might not even exist.

I had a similar issue a while back, my router is setup to use DHCP and OpenDNS nameservers, but apt-get kept throwing errors so I edited dhcp.conf and added the nameservers to my desktop.

This is what is in my apt.conf file:

I tried this and it worked!!!! Thank you so much. I added the opendns servers to my dhcp.config file and everything seems to be working fine now.

Just so anyone who looks this up in the future knows. I ended up using the google DNS server 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 instead of the opendns one. The open dns server was blocking a few sites I reguarly visit because it had parental controls enabled.

Just FYI.

The GPG error isn't a concern, that's just the Iceweasel 4 repo without a key.

Edit: Maybe a thread like this should be Stickied?
