Mint 12 Thinkpad T400

Postby xtree on Sat Nov 26, 2011 3:56 pm

I just installed Mint 12 on my Thinkpad T400 with switchable graphics. When I installed Mint 12 it picked up the Intel Graphics Adapter instead of the ATI adapter. Once booted Additional Drivers was lit. I activated the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post release updates failed to activate). Once rebooted experience went from standard to none and I lost Gnome 3 shell. How do I get the standard experience back without re-installing?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

If you can get into the desktop, which it sounds like, just de-activate the ATI driver and reboot. If this still doesn't work remove the FGLRX driver manually in synaptic and possibly also the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file if it exists.

If you mean onboard Intel graphics with an additional 3D controller then there is currently little support in linux for this. If not sure post the output of lspci.

I tried disabling but not removing via synaptic. Is there an experience automatically loaded each boot if an accelerated or 3D video adapter is detected? I'm just trying to understand how this works. I went to bare metal since I couldn't get the Gnome 3 experience installing Mint 12 under VMware Workstation 8.01.

One final thing if I disable the Intel Graphics adapter in the Thinkpad bios and I can use the ATI graphics adapter. If I install the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver I get corrupted graphics. Is there a bug report I should report this to?

The repositories FLGRX driver doesn't work with Gnome 3. I also have corrupted graphics on my Thinkpad W500 and many more people have seen this behaviour.
Falling back to Gnome Classic works however. Also MATE works with the FGLRX driver, but MATE has a problem with loading Xrandr settings at startup, which is my problem.
From another thread I read that updating to ATI's latest FGLRX driver solves the Gnome 3 problem.
See this wiki to install latest ATI driver. Should be the same procedure as Ubuntu 11.10.

Nevermind, it seems that even the latest driver doesn't work on Gnome3. Fall back to Gnome 2 or MATE is the solution to get usable graphics with ATI cards.
