Mint looks different on different computers.

Mint looks different on different computers.

Postby Sukid on Tue Mar 13, 2012 11:22 pm

Just started checking Mint out, very nice. :D I installed it both in a virtualbox installation on my desktop and dual booting on my netbook...

On the netbook, it looks like this. Same as the screenshots. But in my virtualbox install it looks like this.

Going to be using it most of the time on my netbook but still, odd. What's making it vary? Virtualbox?

I'm probably wrong, but perhaps it chooses a different theme for different resolutions?

Welcome to the Mint family! 8)
I think the virtualbox install is running in fallback mode. Try and enable 3d acceleration in settings.

Yes, the first screenshot is the default Mint 12 session (Gnome Shell) and the other is the fallback mode because you have yet to enable 3d acceleration in your virtualbox (the default session requires accelerated graphics to run).
Thank you for this thread. That’s all I can say. You most definitely have made this forum into something special. You clearly know what you are doing, you’ve covered so many bases. Thanks!

I just installed mint 12 on my laptop, and it looks like his second screenshot, but I would prefer it look like the other one. Any help would be wonderful.

That's my experience as well. I installed it once and then after some trial period I re-installed Mint (newly fresh install). Please note that i wiped my hard drive with the Gparted live-cd so that the whole hard drive is clean (no partitions left so that no old/previous installations are left). And the second time, i got the feeling that Mint was working differently in some way. I'm curious why that is.
