Gnome3 doesn't seem to work

Gnome3 doesn't seem to work

Postby jag7720 on Mon Apr 16, 2012 11:00 pm

I did a fresh install of LM12 64bit on my system

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHzl
GeForce GTX 260

etc...

Gnome3 doesn't seem to be working... all I get is a computer and home icons on he desktop... no hot link corner, no menubar no other fancy stuff.

I can get into "classic" mode and it looks like the old version of gnome. I tried installing cinnamon and it acts the same way as gnome3.

Am I missing something? How can I get the full functionality of gnome3 and/or cinnamon

side note: I had fedora17 installed and I got all the fancy stuff with gnome3... just don't like fedora.

If you boot with compatibility mode or boot with "nomodeset" 3d accelerated driver will be disable.
First try update NVIDIA driver to latest with : ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update

check "additional driver" you will see the latest driver as nvidia curent, install nvidia curent and reboot

execute "inxi -Gx " it will show you :

Graphics: Card: nVidia GT520 [GeForce GT520] bus-ID: 01:00.0 X.Org 1.10.4 driver nvidia
GLX Renderer GeForce GT 520/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.40 Direct Rendering Yes

Hi,

I've seen the same. It seems to depend on what the default resolution of your monitor is. It will work out of the box on one, but not another.

Press CTL+ALT+T for terminal and then:
Code: Select all
xrandr -q
to see what available modes you have.
Set to a lower 4:3 resolution. Example:
Code: Select all
xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode 1024x768

This gets me my menus on two different machines. The same workaround applies to blurry/missing menus in Cinnamon.
Setting back to higher resolution, they disappear again.

I think it is related to an xorg rendering bug and Virtual size, but not sure. (I'm a noob.)
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47266
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=668828

Installing proprietary drivers may be a workaround.
*Edit Forgot to mention, the same applies to missing menus in Ubuntu 12.04 dash. I don't think it is specific to Mint.
