Root password dialog and Cancel

In Mint 14 MATE, when I start an application which requires a root password (for example Synaptic), a password dialog appears. If a click "Cancel", the system freezes for 20 seconds. Is this normal? I tried it on a computer with Intel i7 (8 cores) and 8 GB RAM.

The time might be long; it depends on what your activities (the busyness of the OS) are while canceling that operation
