[Resolved] Lengthy Boot Into MATE

Postby Trapper on Tue May 08, 2012 4:11 pm

When I boot up my LMDE I am experiencing a very lengthy delay between the time my desktop background appears and my MATE panels and everything else loads in. When I am speaking about "lengthy" I am meaning 25 to 30 seconds between the time I first see my desktop background to when I get panels and can actually use my system. I don't have anything, nor have I ever had anything that has taken so long between desktop background display and a fully loaded, usable state. Is anyone else experiencing this behavior? Also, my total boot time from the time I leave the grub menu to a usable desktop is right around 65 seconds. Is this 'normal'?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

No, that isn't normal. One of advantages of Linux is fast boot. Try to "reinstall" mate packages through synaptic. Or maybe some of your drivers are doing something nasty.

Yeah, I was pretty sure it isn't normal. My U-10.04 on the same box takes about 5 to 7 seconds between a visible background and a full loaded desktop. The overall boot is also about 20 seconds quicker.

After login you could look at .xsession-errors if that logs any serious problems.

That's because Ubuntu uses a totally different boot process (sysvinit/upstart).
My Linux history: Ubuntu 10.04 - 10.10 - LMDE 201109 - UP4 My sources.list/preferences

Computers is not science. And it's not magic - it's something in between.
