I was so hoping for the last year that Mint 14 would fix this - sad that it hasn't.
However, http://pastebin.com/N0Jv2W5Y works well for me on Mint 14
Thanks!

Re: Patch: fix multimedia keys (play/pause etc) in MATE desk
Bumping this thread. This is indeed an issue. I guess I understand a bit why it isn't solved yet, since lots of packages seem to come directly from ubuntu's repositories.
Anyway, the script given above doesn't always work, in quodlibet it doesn't so I just patched its dbus plugin as shown in the first post for totem and sonata.
For quodlibet, it's /usr/share/pyshared/quodlibet/plugins/events/dbusmmkey.py
Patching banshee's /usr/lib/banshee/Extensions/Banshee.MultimediaKeys.dll doesn't work though.

Re: Patch: fix multimedia keys (play/pause etc) in MATE desk
Is any update with this problem in latest Mint versions?
Re: Patch: fix multimedia keys (play/pause etc) in MATE desk
This is still a problem in Linux Mint 17 (on Cinnamon). I don't think it's MATE exclusive. I can't get Media Keys to work in Chrome at all--yet they work in Banshee, VLC, etc.
