I cannot install timer-applet as it tells me it depends on...

timer-applet: Depends: python-gnomeapplet which is a virtual package.
Depends: gnome-audio but it is not going to be installed.

What can I do to get this applet installed?

I really can't understand what in the world this broken package is doing in two Ubuntu repos (oneiric and precise) since python-gnomeapplet is long gone like Gnome 2 itself is...

As for the MATE version of this applet, it seems like no one have tried to port it yet, so you can't have it, sorry.
