Previsualization of Windows in Task Bar [SOLVED]

Previsualization of Windows in Task Bar [SOLVED]

Postby xingular on Thu May 24, 2012 7:16 am

Hello everyone.

Is it working the windows previsualization? I selected in Compiz Options but nothing appears when I put the pointer over a window in task bar.
I tried too with a live cd in two computers more... and nothing, the same.

Thanks!

If you mean Window Previews then yes, it should work. Compiz (and Window Previews) works with MATE, at least for me. But there is not much to go on in your post to find out why this isn't the case for you.

First thing that comes to my mind is that you are not actually running Compiz, as by default MATE doesn't use it. If that is the case you could try:
Code: Select all
compiz --replace &
killall -9 marco

Hello, thank you for your answer and help.

Ok, I have the compiz fusion icon on notification área -> right click -> Select Window Manager-> Compiz is selected, not Metacity.

Next, I click on: reload window manager. And, I have previsualization of windows in taskbar!

BUT! The top bar of every window who includes minimize, close, maximize controls/butons... dissapears!

And when I reboot, the bar appears correctly but I still don't have previsualization.

With your tips:

Code: Select all
compiz --replace &

Code: Select all
rosalinda@rosapc ~ $ compiz --replace &
[1] 3854
rosalinda@rosapc ~ $ Backend     : ini
Integration : true
Profile     : default
Adding plugins
Initializing core options...done
Initializing move options...done
Initializing resize options...done
Initializing place options...done
Initializing decoration options...done
Setting Update "command"
Initializing mousepoll options...done
compiz (core) - Error: Plugin 'text' not loaded.

compiz (thumbnail) - Warn: No compatible text plugin found.
Initializing thumbnail options...done

It works, previsualization on.

In other terminal:

Code: Select all
killall -9 marco

But when I reboot... no previsualization :(

Thank you for your time!

Right, here's what worked for me (I'm running LMDE with MATE 1.2). I found what I needed on this forum, so you can look it up if you need more info.

If you want to use compiz you need to add it to startup to avoid using those commands after every restart. Just add the command
Code: Select all
compiz --replace

to startup applications.

You also need to fix the horrible cpu usage you are now likely experiencing. To do that use mateconf-editor. Select /desktop/mate/session/required_components/windowmanager (its value should be marco) and change it to to compiz.

Now compiz should be working nicely, but you probably have different window borders than the one you want and you can't change it in the appearance settings. But you can change it with gconf-editor. Look under /apps/metacity/general/theme and change it to the name of the theme you want. Alternatively you could use Ubuntu Tweak program do to that, but I didn't test that.

Hope it works for you.
