open application icons not visible in Mate panel 1.4.0

Hi,
Am new to Mint, I was customizing the look & feel & tried to have tasks segregated across two panels. I observed that by default the applications launched gets their visibility as an icon in the original panel. So I moved system tray kind of icons that I added in the home panel into a new panel. In this process I messed up & deleted all the panels & started afresh. Now to my surprise, the launched apps dont show up as icons in any of the panels. Is it that as the original home panel is gone, its merely a numbering problem? Can i alter the configuration in the back end registry of panels? As I remember the error pop ups initially that Mate was not able to load the panel due to some error, etc.
Just wanted to know, as displaying apps icon in panel & keeping system tray type icons in another panel is more more convenient for me. So, please let me know how to recover the original behavior of Mate panels.
Thanks in advance, sanjeev
