Hello folks,
I installed Linux Mint Mate lately and I'm very happy with the layout. I only have one question: is there any way to change the colour of the panel from this white-silvery to, say, black? I liked that quite a lot in Cinnamon and would gladly have it on Mate as well.

Changing the theme changes the panel color. However, you can just change the color by right clicking the panel choose properties then choose the background tab and change the color there.
