How to create 2 mate-panel configs, immediately loadable?

On my laptop sometimes I have 3 external monitors (HDMI + 2x displaylink, laptop screen disabled).

Other times I just have my laptop (laptop screen only)

Mate/Xorg seamlessly switches between the 2 environments without any config changes. All I do is shut down plugged/unplugged and power up plugged/unplugged.

The only problem is mate-panel.

Going from 3 mate-panels to 1 mate-panel or vice versa is really tedious. And every time I switch I risk mate-panel crashing and locking up my laptop: viewtopic.php?f=206&t=159807

Is there some way of exporting and importing the current mate-panel config into a config file and loading it with a simple command?

Alternatively I can script it... where are the mate-panel config files located?
