SOLVED-Mate-Appearance-Properties problem

Post by Deminar »

Hi everyone,
I have been trying to figure this one out for a while but I can't seem to put my finger on it. I can no longer change my desktop backgrounds either by right-clicking on my desktop or by going in the appearance to select the backgrounds. When I do so, the Appearance freezes and then just disappears. I can change the themes and the fonts. Just not the backgrounds.
Here's the odd thing. If I create another admin user, this problem goes away. If I launch the appearance from the terminal but using Sudo (sudo mate-appearance-properties), it works...even on my regular user. If I don't use Sudo, it crashes but does generate the following error message:

(mate-appearance-properties:11187): GLib-ERROR **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.34.1/./glib/gmem.c:230: failed to allocate 2147483648 bytes
Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)

It's more an annoyance than a problem but does anyone have any suggestions?

Linux Mate 14, 32 bits

Regards,

Deminar

Just a guess but check file permissions. As root:

chown -R {username}:{username} /home/{username}

Where {username} is the actual login name of the user.

I encountered similar problem, but a little different. On my Linuxmint 13 mate, it simply did nothing if I change the background picture. It did not crash. I also tried "sudo mate-appearance-properties ", but still did not work. No changes at all.

There must be something nasty with the desktop background settings in Linuxmint mate. Can any developer check this, or help us?

That didn't work. I have also inadvertently deleted all admin users while trying to fix it last night. I couldn't do anything afterwards. Even loading in single user mode wouldn't work. So I started feom scratch. Now it's fixed.
