Multiple workspaces Chrome bleed through

Post by jdnier »

Linux Mint 17 Qiana Mate edition, 3.13.0-37-generic #64-Ubuntu SMP
System76 Gazelle Professional (gazp6)
12 GB RAM
GeForce GTX 560M (1536 MB)
Nvidia driver: 331.38

I've been have a Mate problem with windows on one workspace (especially Google Chrome windows) appearing on other workspaces. I'm using a dual monitor set up; the bleed through only happens on my external (top) monitor. For example, I have Firefox running in one workspace and Chrome running in another workspace. (I'm currenly using 10 workspaces.) The Chrome windows will randomly appear in my Firefox workspace, sometimes in the background, sometimes covering the foreground window (may be Firefox or a terminal window). The Chrome windows are not clickable and will go away if I refresh my foreground window (e.g., minimize/maximize) but usually flicker back within 5-10 seconds. This behavior is obnoxious and I've been dealing with it most days for months. Quitting Chrome cures the problem. Restarting Chrome usually leads to the problem happening again, often immediately. Reboots seem to help for a while, although only sometimes. I've tried using different kernels, turning composting window manager on/off, disabling OpenGL and hardware acceleration in Chrome, and updating the Nvidia driver multiple times. Nothing helps. While primarily a Chrome problem, occasionally I've see Spotify windows bleed through as well.

I had the same problem running a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04 with Gnome Classic no effects desktop. Could this be some hardware problem?

I'll attach a couple screenshots. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Actually, the problem happens even when I'm not using an external monitor -- like right now, using the laptop in my lap.

I finally found some discussion on this issue. It's a long-standing problem and affects multiple OSes, multiple window managers, and maybe even multiple graphics drivers (reports for both Nvidia and Intel).

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issu ... ?id=370022
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1309801

Since the Nvidia 331 driver seems to be implicated, I resorted to loading this PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

I upgraded all Nvidia 331 packages to 346.

Finally, the problem has gone away. This may be premature... but so far, so good.
