Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

stefano,
mate-themes is in conflict with gnome-themes (in todays updates from tridex)
Code: Select all
Unpacking replacement mate-themes ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/mate-themes_1.2.1-1+wheezy_all.deb (--unpack):
 trying to overwrite '/usr/share/themes/Glider/gtk-2.0/gtkrc', which is also in package gnome-themes 2.30.2-1
configured to not write apport reports
                                      dpkg-deb: error: subprocess paste was killed by signal (Broken pipe)

for the moment follow this "fix" here viewtopic.php?f=198&t=67502&p=562451#p562451

There's a snag with LMDE and tridex repos, libdjvulibre21 had a recent update that isn't included in UP4.

Code: Select all
The following packages will be upgraded:
  atril atril-common libatril{b}
3 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 1,813 kB of archives. After unpacking 16.4 kB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libatril: Depends: libdjvulibre21 (>= 3.5.25.2) but 3.5.24-9 is installed.

$ apt-cache policy libdjvulibre21
libdjvulibre21:
  Installed: 3.5.24-9
  Candidate: 3.5.24-9

Could this be fixed by downloading the testing version from debian.org? Or shouldn't I?

if all the deps are satisfied, i don't see the danger (but if you have to start chasing deps of deps, then ... dunno)

I've pinned debian.org to 100 and this is all
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get -s install libdjvulibre21=3.5.25.2-1 libdjvulibre-text=3.5.25.2-1

I don't think so. ;) Or will I need this when MATE updates?

(With debian.org still pinned at 100 because with the same apt-pinning as linuxmint.com it wants to upgrade almost 500 pkgs.)
Should I leave X for a "wet-run"?

i was asking you above to try the dry-run with debian.org at 500 just to see if those pkgs had any dep.

this last output (with the dist-upgrade) is with the tridex repo? if so, it makes sense, you are upgrading ALL mate to a newer v.

Should I leave X for a "wet-run"?
well it's up to you, imo is overkilling :lol: you are just updating a DE.

The "(with the dry-run switch ofc :mrgreen:)" irritated me. But all is well.

No, it's with the mate-desktop.org repo. ;) Which else is there?

Should I leave the DE? (I need to leave X then to install or not?)

ofc = of course :P

i think it's safe to update a DE with the DE running; i always do it with kde (and it's quiet often without issues, ofc :lol: you should logout/restart after)

Seriously, I thought that was a typo. With switch off or with switch of course. :D

But there's too much server load I will wait till tomorrow.

I've done did it. Rebooted. Everything smooth so far. (First thing I noticed is that Caja doesn't dies by first touch. And I had to set Sensors Applet Preferences anew. But no problem.)
<span size="large" weight="bold">Incompatible sensors
configuration found</span>

Unfortunately the previous configuration for MATE Sensors
Applet is not compatible with this version. The existing
sensors data will be overwritten with the default values for
this new version.

I've upgraded my LMDE laptop to UP4 and have installed MATE. I'm very impressed with the advanced state of MATE 1.2 and it has become almost indistinguishable from Gnome2. Congratulations to Perberos, Stefano, and the rest of the team for MATE having been chosen to be the default DE for the Linux Mint iso! :)

Just two small issues/requests regarding MATE on LMDE:

1-I noticed there is no caja-dropbox package in any of the Debian repos (I looked in LMDE latest, packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/debian, Debian testing, and Debian unstable repos). Are there plans to package caja-dropbox for Debian/LMDE?

2-When I'd print in Gnome2, a print manager applet would show up on the panel. When I print in LMDE/MATE, there are no notifications of any kind. Is there (or are there plans to develop) a print manager applet (or at least printing-related notifications) for mate-panel?
