Randomly resetting to login screen and graphical glitch

Postby willmcgugan on Wed Jul 11, 2012 6:16 am

I've been experiencing a frustrating issue with Mint 13 and Cinnamon on my desktop machine. At seemingly random intervals I'm thrown back to the login screen (all apps are closed abruptly). When I log in there is a group of dots on the top left hand corner of the screen that flicker a little, and are on top of any window. I've attached a partial screenshot.

Image

I figured the issue may be graphics drivers related, since I've had problems with my NVidia drivers before. But reverting to old drivers didn't fix it.

I'm running the 64 bit version on dual monitor. Same version of Mint on my laptop, and that runs fine, no issues.

Any help appreciated.

Hi,

can you post the output of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old file after such a crash? As you already mentioned, this sounds like a issue with the nvidia driver.

I'm experiencing exactly the same irritanting behaviour on my desktop with Mint 13 and Cinnamon, my video card is a Nvidia 9800 GT and drivers are v. 295.59.
I've changed from MDM to GDM but no joy, changed themse but still the problem persists.

Are you still having this problem or did you find a solution ? I'm so annoyed that I' ll soon go back to MINT 12 which worked flawlessly !

That's my setup. I tried loads of old Nvidia drivers, all with the same problem. The 173.14 legacy drivers work without the glitch, but there is a noticeable loss in performance.

I wish I knew exactly what component was the root cause. I'd consider running Ubuntu on my desktop, but for all I know the bug will be there too...

Re: (SOLVED) Random reset to login screen and graphical glit

Postby robban59 on Fri Aug 24, 2012 3:54 pm

Hi everybody,

today I installed the new NVIDIA driver 304.37 and after several hours of smooth operation, I think the problem is solved !

No reset to login screen and big pixels in the upper left corner anymore.
