Does the MATE version of Mint 13 Maya revert to fallback if 3D accelleration is not found?

No. MATE doesn't need 3D acceleration.

Sk8luvr2,
thank you very much for your participation in this little experiment
it's appreciated.

michael thomas,
although the symptoms are similar you have a completely different issue:
that is an optimus card >> your best bet is bumbleblee >> see this topic

Thanks ZeroZero. I did install the MATE version and it is working perfectly for me.

However, now I really want to play with an actual install of Cinnamon to see how it behaves. I thought I had been in Cinnamon and it had just been set up to look very much like Gnome 2, Lol. (I feel a little foolish about that). I've got another computer that I'll install the Cinnamon version on so I can really compare them. You guys might want to code in a little info box that pops-up after the desktop boots whenever it goes into fallback mode for some reason.

In the meantime, I have an install of Linux Mint 13 w/MATE that works perfectly so far, looks great and will meet my client's needs going forward. I may play with getting the 3D accelleration working on this machine. I tried some the other night, but had some issues with it and decided to move on.

If I get Cinnamon to work with this machine, I'll post my findings in case someone else is trying to install it on a T23. But I am very happy with this install with MATE. It will probably be my OS and desktop combination of choice.

good to know :D

that probably won't be necessary  next cinnamon versions will have (most probably) a 2D fully capable version with the same user-experience as the 3D.

Thanks for the info about the bumblebee project!
this technology is very hardware-specific, unless you have an nvidia optimus laptop it won't be useful for you.

Yup, it took me a minute that the 'bumblebee' part of your response was for the other gentleman that posted.
As I recall, it was Mesa that I played around with for my SuperSavage. Loaded up all the dependencies, but got some other non-dependency related error halfway through 'make'. Had to get up early, so I just gave it up and decided to go with the other one instead.

Good to know that subsequent versions of Cinnamon may support this machine with 2D. Maybe I'll try it again later. As I said before, the MATE version works great!

Thanks Again. :)
