Any news on Cinnamon?

Postby veggen on Sat Jul 21, 2012 4:29 am

I was just wondering if some has a clue what's happening with Cinnamon... It was aggressively developed up until 1.4 and then just sort of stopped. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not whining, I'm fully aware that devs have other things on their hands, I was just wondering if anyone knows if the long pause was something planned etc.

Don't worry, development is as busy as it has ever been, there are just longer intervals between releases now. See https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/commits/master to keep track of what changes go into Cinnamon - as you can see it's not a quiet place. If you are keen on using the new features (there are many, the development version is now as different from 1.4 as 1.4 was from 1.3) then tap onto the Cinnamon Nightly PPA. I only very rarely (once) encounter serious problems with it.

thanks for info
-are we likely to get some official updates to cinnamon in lm13? or just from the daily ppa?
-and how easy is it to go back to the standard version if something goes horribly wrong?
-are themes likely to be broken because of the new features?

No idea! Could be next week, could be by Mint 14, clem knows.

and how easy is it to go back to the standard version if something goes horribly wrong?

Fairly easy, just purge the added PPA. I can help if that becomes an issue.

are themes likely to be broken because of the new features?

Using Cinnamon Nightly you are sort of tied to the default Cinnamon theme (by which I mean the theme named "Cinnamon", not Maya's Nightlife theme) as that is always kept up-to-date. Most of my themes are compatible as well to a great extent (baldr, ambiance, gnome, zuktiwo and google+) but I'm already getting a bit behind again with the new alt tab features.

Generally I'd recommend switching to the nightly PPA - may just be dumb luck on my setup but it's as stable as the officially released 1.4 on my machine, the glitches that occur occasional concern the UI, not anything serious (system crash etc).

Just switched to nightly PPA. Looks ok so far. If someone else wants to do the same, don't forget this.

Sounds a bit risky, though, unless you devote a partition to the nightly builds. Might as well just do that ... :)

Unfortunately current Cinnamon can't be installed on Debian Testing anymore since it switched to Gnome 3.4 and removed libcogl5 before the freeze. And newer versions of Cinnamon need at least libc6 2.14 which is not yet available in Debian :(

If you cannot apt-get it, either it is not useful or it does not exist.

clem has just bumped Cinnamon to version 1.5, usually that means a release is imminent :D

Does any one know if 1.5 fixes the freeze when using libreoffice?

Is there any way to get new features in maya without nightly PPA? I'm a bit nervous and would prefer a "stable" PPA or something less risky.

The main feature I wait for is "workspace flip on move" and I think this feature is available in recent builds (or will be soon).

I thought that 1.5.2 was going to land in the Romeo (unstable) repo, but that hasn't happened yet. I guess Clem is just busy working on Nadia and stuff, so it's just a matter of time; or perhaps 1.5.2 is not deemed ready yet.

I would like to see the Cinnamon page updated more often, that's for sure, perhaps that's a task that could be entrusted to some contributor?

I'm actually on the last nighty build and enjoy some improvements. However, the very good "desktop scroller" extension does'nt work anymore. Any idea to fix it? Edge Flip is better than nothing, but I still want dekstop scoller.

Open up the extension's archive and locate metadata.json file inside. Find the line with Cinnamon version and either add the version you're using or completely remove the line (not sure about this, but I think removing it will enable the extension for all Cinnamon versions).
The line looks like this:
Code: Select all
"cinnamon-version": [ "1.3.0", "1.3.1", "1.3.2", "1.4.0", "1.4.1", "1.4.2" ],

Thank you, it works now.

However, there are still memory leak issues (this was the main reason I switched to nightly builds).

And now we got Cinnamon 1.6!
But I've read it won't be available for Maya through the usual channels any time soon...
