[SOLVED] cinnamon-settings won't start

No module named gconf

Using up-to date Ubuntu Precise as of 23-Apr-2012, etc., which uses dconf instead of gconf now. Can anyone help?

Are you sure you have the gconf2-*, libgconf2-* and gnome-settings-daemon packages installed?

and python-gconf, python-gnome2 and python-gobject* ?

Well, not exactly. Why should all this gnome2/gconf stuff be needed in a DE using gnome3 tech? And if cinnamon does depend on them being installed, then why are they not listed as depends in debian/control?

Well, I don't know what is for Gnome2 and what for Gnome3. I don't have Gnome2 installed, only Gnome3 with Cinnamon in my system, but those libraries are present.

About dependencies, you must remember that Cinnamon is still a work-in-progress. From my point of view, at this stage, it's better to install Gnome-shell first and then Cinnamon on top of it. That way you'll be absolutelly sure you'll have the dependencies hell solved.

But you can still try to install python-gconf and see if it resolves the problems with cinnamon-settings.

By golly, that did it! Thank you for the pointer. By the way, I did exactly as you propose: installed gnome-shell and then cinnamon, but apt-get still didn't pull in python-gconf as a dependency.
