[SOLVED] Where's "Open as root"?

Hello, everyone.

While trying to install some Cinnamon themes, I found out that the right click function of "Open as root" that we had once, is no longer there.
I read in another thread that the nautilus-gksu package is responsible for that, and that it is installed by default in Mint 12, which is true.
What's going on? Is it my installation, or is it something else?

P.S. I know the terminal way of opening as root, but it's much easier by right-clicking, and to be honest, I miss this Nautilus function in Gnome 3.

I also have the same problem - I'm running Mint 12, *not* LMDE, and nautilus-gksu is installed, according to Synaptic, but I don't have the Open as root option in my right-click menu.

(I use the Places with Terminal Launcher applet, which automatically opens File System as root, as a work-around, but I'm still wondering why it doesn't work.)

Create a symbolic link from the Gnome2 library that does work to the Gnome3 folder that doesn't:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/nautilus/extensions-2.0/libnautilus-gksu.so /usr/lib/nautilus/extensions-3.0/libnautilus-gksu.so

Logout
Log in again

"Open as administrator" should be an option again.

LOG OUT/LOG IN

I've been using it this way since Gnome 3.x came out and it works perfectly for me.
The open as administrator option is back in Nautilus 3.x

Gene, I d'ld your file and put it in the directory you listed. Did it as root. Log out/log in...no option in Nautilus right-click menu. Even rebooted just to be sure.

What are the permissions on your file? Mine are root (owner) read/write, root (group) read-only, others read-only. Does it need the option to run as a program checked?

EDIT: Just ticked the run as program permission. Log out/log in...no difference

Hi Squeezy...

You know your not the first to have that problem. It always works for me. I have done it 4 or 5 times on different Gnome 3.x partitions.

Have a look here.



owner: root = Read and Write
Group: root = Read and Write
Others = Read and Write

unchecked = Allow executing file as program

Nautilus 3.2.1

LMDE/Testing/Gnome 3.2.1

I did it just as I described.
Copied the file as root, log-out/in....Bingo.

As I mentioned I have run this since Gnome 3.0 came out in LMDE/SID last Oct 14th.
And I just did it to a fresh install of LMDE-201204-64bit last week. It has always worked for me.

While I was answering thie previous posts, another post came up in the Greek Linux Mint Forum by Versys650gr (http://linuxmint.gr/index.php?topic=1362.0).
It goes like this:

First of all, open a terminal and type

Code: Select all

sudo su
gedit .gnome2/nautilus-scripts/Open\ as\ administrator

Then, when the empty document opens, we type

Code: Select all

for uri in $NAUTILUS_SCRIPT_SELECTED_URIS; do

gksudo "gnome-open $uri" &

done

and we save it.
We go back to the Terminal and we type

Code: Select all

sudo chmod +x .gnome2/nautilus-scripts/Open\ as\ administrator

After that, we can open files as root.

Gene, you have all permission read/write so I'll try that. Don't know that anything writes to that file so read-only should be OK.

Maybe it's because I have a Cinnamon-only install? I didn't install Gnome and then put Cinnamon over it. I just let Cinnamon pull in whatever it wanted when it installed.

I'm also running this against wheezy so that should be the same as yours, Gnome 3.2.1, Nautilus 3.2.1, Cinnamon 1.4

Oh well, not critical but I'll keep hacking away at it

Mine is Cinnamon/Shell only (no Mate, removed it totally, have Mate on a separate partition) also.

Will do on the script

I installed Cinnamon over a base console-only install. There was nothing on it prior to Cinnamon. A few hiccups but it's working sweetly for the most part!

OK, created the script in sdim's post. Works like a charm. You get a Scripts flyout submenu with your new "Open as administrator" choice listed.
