I am a new member to this forum and I am not sure if I am on the right thread. I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04LTS and I dislike the Unity Desktop that has been shipped from 11.04 onwards. I also dislike the GNOME 3 Desktop. I am looking for an alternative Desktop. I buy every issue of 'Linux Magazine'. Issue 135 Feb 2012 came with Linux Mint 12 with MGSE live CD. It really looked great and professional, however I was not able to add any icons and shortcuts to its' desktop. I liked the start menu, it looks similar to the one in KDE.
I also looked up Linux Mint in Wikipedia where I found out about your Cinnamon Desktop. I have had a look at your screenshots, they really look nice, and noticed that they had icons on the desktop like in GNOME2. My question is:- will I, as a user, be able to add my own shortcuts and icons to the desktop? Would I also be able to add items to the program groups on the Start Menu?
I also had a look at the Mate Desktop which also looks great. I prefer Cinnamon though.
Regards
Philip
