I reboot and choose cinnamon from the login screen.
BUT, I just get the desktop, with no menu bars at all. I have to use ctrl-alt-backspace to get back to the login screen and log back in to xubuntu gui.
And there I find I've got an ubuntu crash report. I've repeated this multiple times, cinnamon always appears without the menu bars and I get a crash report as soon as I go back into another gui. This is what I thought might be important info from the crash report. (The Ubuntu Crash report, for reasons quite beyond my comprehension, will not allow you to copy it's content, so I had to type this by hand, there may be typos):
