cinnamon crashed with SIGSEGV in cogl_texture_set_region_fro

Postby Kilarin on Thu May 10, 2012 9:00 pm

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04. As soon as I upgraded, the first thing I noticed was my cinnamon UI option was gone from the login menu. So I logged in to xubuntu and installed cinnamon again:

I reboot and choose cinnamon from the login screen.

BUT, I just get the desktop, with no menu bars at all. I have to use ctrl-alt-backspace to get back to the login screen and log back in to xubuntu gui.

And there I find I've got an ubuntu crash report. I've repeated this multiple times, cinnamon always appears without the menu bars and I get a crash report as soon as I go back into another gui. This is what I thought might be important info from the crash report. (The Ubuntu Crash report, for reasons quite beyond my comprehension, will not allow you to copy it's content, so I had to type this by hand, there may be typos):

at this moment the stable ppa is still not compatible with precise; you may try the nightly, see here

I tried:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

And still no menu bars in cinnamon, but no crash message either.

Oh well, I'll just use xubuntu for a while, but I miss cinnamon. :)

thanks for the help!

hello folks,

Sorry for reviving such an old thread, but I've still got the exact same problem. I had hoped that when Cinnamon went the 1.6 I could start using it again. But if I boot into cinnamon I get the desktop with no menus. And when I boot back into Ubuntu I have a crash report that looks like this:

Code: Select all
ExecutablePath
  /usr/bin/cinnamon
Package
  cinnamon 1.6.0-20120924044005-precise [origin: LP-PPA-gwendal-lebihan-dev-cinnamon-nightly]
Title
cinnamon crashed with SIGSEGV in cogl_texture_set_region_from_bitmap_EXP()
ApportVersion
  2.0.1-0ubuntu13
Architecture
  i386
DistroRelease
  Ubuntu 12.04
NonfreeKernalModules
  nvidia
SegvReason
  reading NULL VMA

Any idea what could be causing this problem? I would REALLY like to switch to cinnamon!

Is there any other information I could supply? Like I said, I would really like to be using cinnamon, but I can't get past this error.

I think my problem may be related to this Ubuntu bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/964275

gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in cogl_texture_set_region_from_bitmap_EXP()

just I'm dying in cinnamon instead of gnome-shell. Looks like some kind of nvidia problem?
