cinnamon wont load

after trying to get the nvidia driver to work (it doesn't) cinnamon nolonger loads. I am stuck with gnome desktop with panels top and bottom which cant be edited and resolution on one screen set at 1024x768. i removed the nvidia driver and still cannot load cinnamon desktop. I thought maybe i could delete the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and restart X but there is no xorg.conf file. I only found xorg.conf.failsafe. any ideas how to fix this issue?

How did you install the nividia drivers? With Jockey? Or with Synaptic or the command line? The nvidia drivers probably didn't work becasue nvidia-xconfig wasn't ran after installing the nvidia drivers. Reinstall them from the command prompt after start up. "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings" then "sudo nvidia-xconfig" and reboot

i used the additional drivers utility in system settings. has always worked before. m trying your method now.

well that didnt work. now have resolution of 640x480 and cant change it!
using the additional drivers utility again to if that works

ok, so after running the additional drivers utility to install nvidia driver i have one monitor up with the correct resolution. i get this error message after login:

so now im gonna use the nvidia settings to try to get the other monitor up. let u know how it goes

used the nvidia xserver setting to enable the 2nd monitor (twin view) absolute. Made the 1st monitor left of.. and all the icons are visible on the panel and in the main menu!! Why it didnt work previously I have no idea. But i am afraid to reboot. i know it get all screwed up if i do that.
