Screen "tearing" every time the taskbar is modified, why?

OS: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
DE: latest cinnamon release
Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 6520G

Basically, each time a notification or icon is added automatically to the taskbar, the screen flickers/glitches/tears. For example, each time I receive a message in Pidgin, the screen flickers when the little icon in the lower right appears (http://i.imgur.com/o3lub.png not visible, dunno why), and when I click on the icon to take me to the message, it flickers when the icon goes away. This also happens with the autohide taskbar feature.

In fact, this topic right here exactly describes what's happening to me: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 8&t=107476

After googling around, I read some posts on the Ubuntu forums about turning on "Tear Free" in the Catalyst Control Center, but that does nothing.

Any help is appreciated.

Try this:

Execute the following command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

gksu gedit /etc/environment
At the opened file, append the following line:

Code: Select all

CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-culling
Save and reboot.
Any changes?

No, unfortunately there's still a glitchy mess when the taskbar is modified.

I forgot to mention this: the reason I'm not using the open-source driver is because I can't get past a black screen at boot without using nomodeset, so I installed the proprietary ATI driver to keep from having to edit the launch option every time I boot.

Exactly the same problem.
