Looks good, but maybe the nvidia-352 will work even better for your card. It's already in the mamarley PPA....

Is there any way I can get a notification if there is ever a newer update?
Since it's from a different PPA, it doesn't show up in my Update Manager.

Also, which do you recommend for a casual user?

The pessimist in me doesn't believe it will stop the lag, I think 349 should have been sufficient, but I will hope for the best.

@ericramos1990: simply activate the mamarley PPA in your sources list and run:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-352

Then reboot.

I'm not sure whether this will help for this particular problem, but maybe it will. And it can do no harm anyway....

I do have the mamarley PPA "enabled" boxes checked off, but it still did not show up in my software manager.

After trying it out with the new driver, it seems to making a huge difference.
But maybe it is because I rebooted (it always used to be fast and snappy after a fresh reboot, but gets slower after I do processes)

I will give it some time, and see if the driver really was the ultimate remedy!

That's because you probably only get updates for minor versions of the main driver version.

For example: when you now have the nvidia-352.09, you'll get an update when the nvidia-352.20 is added to the PPA. Not when the nvidia-360.xx will be added, because that's another main version which might even be unfit for your video card.

Surprisingly, installing the 352 driver did the trick! After a good 10 hours of testing, and running moderately heavy processes, the menu does not seem to lag at an unreasonable speed.

However, I am getting much more screen tearing from this driver than the 349. But to be honest, the lag annoyed me so much, I'd rather have the screen tearing+lagless menu

The cinnamon menu have an advance characteristic, to facilitate move the mouse from the categories to the application called vectorbox. Please see: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/1775 The vectorbox is a an OpenGL transparent polygon that is rendering when the mouse is moving and the menu is open. This is pretty important to facilitate the user interaction, but have a big computational cost. If your grapichs drivers don't work properly this have a significant impact in the performance. When your graphics drivers are ok, you can not note this.

SORTED ... If you have a folder/browser or whatever open the menu is lightning fast it only messes about when it is on it's own
