Mint 14 noob, some basic challenges

I'm a noob to mint 14, not exactly new to linux in general... Please feel free to move to a better place as you see fit.

First off, I'm thrilled with it, and it's truly a worthy replacement to mint 11 (the first, IMHO).

With that out of the way, here's what's going on:

My Custom shortcuts don't work: when I add a shortcut, and assign a hot-key, then press the hotkey, nothing happens. For example if I make the command gedit, and assign CTRL+ALT+g, it simply does nothing. Pre-made shortcuts work perfectly.

Can't modify width of the panel: I like to shrink my panel down and hide it on the bottom left, with just the menu and notification area. I can't figure out how to change the panel so that it's not full length.

Nemo doesn't show progress of file operations. It does the job well, just gives no output in terms of what it's doing.

Chromium title buttons are on the right when not using the "system title bar and borders" option, even though they are set to be on the left in the system.

The Mint menu addon doesn't work for cairo dock. This probably can't be resolved, but it would be nice to have the menu in my dock. When I click the mint menu icon it does nothing, probably because it's designed for Gnome 2.

Vidalia doesn't show in Cairo notification area when hidden. (Probably an issue with the dock more than the DE)

Thanks for any feedback or help, and a HUGE congrats to clem and the team on what is IMO the greatest release of the greatest distro the world has ever known.
