Mint 14 / Cinnamon 1.6 - Widget Layer

Is there any way to get a widget layer in Mint 14 / Cinnamon 1.6?

The usual approach used to be Screenlets+Compiz "Widget Layer" -- is there anything that will work with this combo? If not (and I think it's unlikely right now), how WOULD something like that get implemented; as a Cinnamon "extension?"
