mouse text-marking/selecting behavior

How can I change the the way text is selected in a single-line textbox, like e.g. the google search-box in firefox (afaik the problem applies for all text-boxes in cinnamon (and gnome)).
More precisely:
If I want to select a section of text in a text-box by holding the left mouse key, it depends on whether the mouse cursor is above or below the textbox (below -> text right of the selection starting point, above -> left of it) which text is selected. I would like to change this above/below behavior to left/right behavior (like in Windows).
I had the same problem with ubuntu/gnome.
