How to get out of 2d fallback mode (2 GPUs)

I'm stuck in Cinnamon 2d mode and want to get 3d back.

I set up Cinnamon 1.6 and LM14 and got Cinnamon to my liking on my dual-monitor single-GPU config and using the Nvidia drivers.

When adding a second GPU and 3rd monitor, Cinnamon reverts to a 2D layout which I am guessing is the Gnome3 fallback interface. I had the same thing with Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity which reverted to a 2D mode. Can I solve this by buying a different second video card or is it a configuration thing? Is there a command to check my GPU's compatibility with a 3d desktop environment?

These are my video cards:

Code: Select all

stew@Romulus ~ $ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF116 [GeForce GTS 450] (rev a1)
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G96 [GeForce 9500 GT] (rev a1)
This is my Xorg.conf:

Code: Select all

# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 304.51 (buildd@batsu) Fri Oct 12 12:53:54 UTC 2012

Still looking for a solution to this...

I don't mind replacing my Nvidia 9500 with something newer, but I first want to know if that is really the problem or if it's something in my config.
