Intalling Applets -- Mint 14 32 bit Cinnamon

Hi,

I have two questions about applets.

1. I have the "Update Manager" installed on the panel, but it is always blank. Is there a way to fix it so it shows the check mark if the computer is up-to-date?

2. I'm having trouble installing my favorite applets after upgrading from Mint 11 to 14. My computer is an old Toshiba Sattelite A10-S129. It is probably near the end of its useful life, and that may be the problem.

From this web site, it looiks like it should be easy to install the applets:
http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/11/top-10- ... s-for.html

It also says to click on the "caret" in the panel. I assume that is this symbol ^. However, my panel does not have the caret, which is clearly shown on the web site's screen shot in the lower right near the clock.

Another web site says to right click on the panel and an applet menu appears, just like it did in Mint 11. However, nothing happens.

The web site also had suggestions for using the terminal to load applets, for example:

wget http://goo.gl/zA5zx -O Screenshot.zip
unzip -q Screenshot.zip -d ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets

The "Screenshot.zip" file downloads in my "/home/jerry" directory, but when I run the second line I get this error message:
"No such file or directory"

Sure enough, I could not find a " /.local/share/cinnamon/applets" directory, so I created a couple of them. This is where my limited Linux skills may be causing the problem. First I created the directory in I believe the root directory. This is where the following directories are located: bin, etc, boot, home, lib, mint ...

I still got an error message. Next I created the directories in "/home/jerry/local/share/cinnamon/applets", but that did not work. Next I noticed the "/." and thought perhaps the folder name should be ".local" instead of "local" so I use "mv" to change the name to ".local" and the directory disappeared.

I'm really enjoying Mint 14 and am glad I upgraded, but would really like to add some applets to my panel.

I re-read the posting guide, and probably should have included my hardware for my question above. Here it is:
