Cinnamon - Enlarge desktop view with hi rez screen.

Hi there.

I have just bought a ThinkPad with an 1280x800 screen. Mint 13 runs great on it but the resolution is killing my eyes! Is there a way that I can permanently enlarge the the desktop view, WITHOUT dropping/lowering the screen resolution? I want the fonts & icons to be larger, but dropping the resolution leaves unsightly black strips of unused screen space. Manually changing fonts in each browser, windows settings etc is a big job & if there's a global zoom setting, that would be ideal.

Any suggestions & assistance would be appreciated.
