Cinnamon not working correctly after package install

After I followed instructions from a forum topic (http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=88554) Cinnamon is visually screwed up.

I ran the command from the topic:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gnome-system-tools
and it made the icons on the panel for Cinnamon Settings, Cinnamon Calendar, Power Manager, etc, become double sized and change to a monochromatic appearance. Also, the buttons on the Window List no longer display the titles of their corresponding windows, just an icon and a lot of blank space.

I've restarted cinnamon and the computer. I also went into Synaptic Package Manager and marked Cinnamon for re-installation, no change.

When I tried "Restore All Settings to Default" from the Cinnamon Settings applet, it fixed the issue until after I restarted Cinnamon again (so I could move the panel from the bottom to the top).

At this point I'd appreciate any advice I can get toward getting Cinnamon back to working like normal.

Hello, annatarlotw.

I am not sure that the installation of the gnome-system-tools is to be blamed for the problems that you experience.
gnome-system-tools are present on my Mint 13 and Mint 14 systems and Cinnamon does not exhibit any of the problems which you report.

For testing purposes you might create another Mint user. Then logout and login as this new user and find out whether this user experiences the same Cinnamon display problems as your normal account. If Cinnamon behaves normally for the new user then there must be a way of fixing the settings of your normal account without resorting to drastic approaches like fresh installation from the scratch.

Kind regards,
Karl
