[Solved] Cin Update then no login?

I was really hoping that others were having problems, as well, and that a solution had been found. I'm not sure what happened, but after updates that included Cinnamon and Cinnamon-common, I rebooted. My grub menu, usually customized, was a little different and after selecting the default entry it asks for name and pw then the screen turns black and gui never returns. If I try the recover menu entry, regardless of which entry I choose, it always tries to "clean" my drive (fsck ?). I am now running off my live CD. Is there any way to get a command line and un-update this and go back to where it was?

Someone on IRC suggested that I look under /var/log/apt and this is what I have:

Code: Select all

Commandline: /usr/sbin/synaptic --hide-main-window --non-interactive --parent-window-id 48234532 -o Synaptic::closeZvt=true --progress-str Please wait, this can take some time --finish-str Update is complete --set-selections-file /tmp/tmpeJYBiQ

Any ideas as to why this would jack up my install? Nobody else on the forums seem to be complaining about this issue. If it was a faulty upgrade shouldn't there be many more issues reported on the forums? any ideas?

I was able to fix this issue and it ended up being pretty simple. I worked for a day logging on with a live cd and hacking into my encrypted home to save all the files I could, as I was expecting a re-install. By this time I wasn't sure if it was a Cinnamon issue or one of the other packages that caused the issues. It dawned on me ( :oops: ) to try logging in under a different gui and Gnome classic worked just fine. I did a apt-get update, upgrade, and dist-upgrade then rebooted. I'm back in Cinnamon now and don't see any issues. All I can think of is something in one of the packages messed up my system and getting back into it a couple of days later one of the newer updates fixed it.
