Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon 64 bit
I have both the update manager applet and the notifications applet in my panel.
In other Ubuntu family distros some sort of pop-up message would happen telling me when I need to updated packages. Automatically. This isn't happening on my computer. Can I make it so?
Thanks much in advance

Re: Not Getting Update Notifications
The shield icon of the Update Manager will change to indicate there are upgrades available. As long as it shows a green check mark your system is up to date. It will show a blue circle with a white i to show upgrades are available. Update Manager doesn't have another way to inform you of this. But of course if you want you can install any other package manager to handle your upgrades, though the Ubuntu one needs hacking a few system files as it isn't meant to be run on anything but Ubuntu. I'm not sure which other package manager will do the pop up notification.
Re: Not Getting Update Notifications
Actually that's not always true. I have two different machines running Linux Mint. On one it shows up the way xenopeek says. On the other it only ever shows a blank shield. On the one that shows the blank shield, if I hover over the shield the tooltip shows that updates are available. Not sure why but the one that doesn't work properly has an ati videocard. I think maybe the panel just doesn't update properly.
When I give opinions, they are my own. Not necessarily those of any other Linux Mint developer or the Linux Mint project as a whole.
Re: Not Getting Update Notifications
Unfortunately this might never happen , as the Update Manager seems to look for updates only after having been clicked on in the panel or started from the menu. However, you can make it happen auto-magically by following the tutorial: Auto Updating the Package List for the Update Manager.xenopeek wrote:The shield icon of the Update Manager will change to indicate there are upgrades available.
