Will not allow screen resolution change.

Post by 1970ShelbyGT500 »

Hi Folks,

I just installed Linux Mint with Cinnamon on a Mac Mini running VMWare Fusion 4. While running in DVD mode, I was able to change resolution. But, after the full instalation is complete, if I select "Display" from the system group, it simply drops to the tray and will not allow me to increase the display resolution. Somehow, I think I'm stuck in limp along mode. What can I do to get Linux Mint to run in full operation mode?

Regards,
Rob

First, running in DVD mode, also known as Live mode, would not have been running under VMWare Fusion. Working under VMWare, you now have 2 things which you must try to make compatible: VMWare and the video drivers needed to access your video modes.

If I misunderstood your installation, please disregard.

In either case, you can try opening a terminal and adding a video mode which is compatible with your display using the method outlined in this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2145806 or use xrandr in a terminal as outlined in this wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution

cwsnyder,

Thanks for the help. I was able to find my screen resolutions, using xrandr. However, I was unable to navigate to the display file, nor could I find it using the terminal's search facility. I think the big issue is the System Preferences dialog for Display is misbehaving. When I attempt to open that dialog, it minimizes and can't be changed to normal size or maximized.

I'm going to hold off on Linux Mint and see what Linux Mint 16 is like. My reason for checking is that I have a number of friends that are looking to re-purpose their computers before the impending discontinuation of support for Windows XP. Most of them are not what I would call "hackers" and they live all over the place, so I can't stop by and hack configuration files for them. As an anecdotal note, I spent years and years hacking autoexec.bat and config.sys files along with registry entries, so this sort of thing isn't new to me. I've done a lot of hack-after-upgrade and hack-after-service-pack sort of thing.

Linux Mint and the included utilities and applications look really cool. In a few more years, it might be a true mainstream system. I'll keep watching.

I applaud the efforts of the developers and thanks again.

Regards,
Rob

Rob, for the type of users you outline, you would be better off with an LTS version, either Mint 13 or Mint 17, rather than updating every 6 months, 9 months at the outside, which is where Ubuntu/Mint is going for non-LTS versions.

You might also look at Debian, but setting up the codecs for playing Windows media files, .mp3, .avi, h264, and DVD playing is going to be a hassle. Debian will give you at least 2 years before a major upgrade is even available to break your installation. (Or Bodhi? which would work on most of the old 256M XP machines as well and is based on Ubuntu LTS. http://www.bodhilinux.com/about_bodhi.php )
