<SOLVED> Cinnamon going to software rendering for some users

Postby Aqualize on Tue Feb 18, 2014 10:20 am

SOLVED: See my post down below: viewtopic.php?f=208&t=159909&p=906973#p906973

I will try to briefly describe to problem and attach logs etc. in the end. But I don't know all the commands you may want output from, I will run some that I've seen during googling the problem. I also write some info if I see any clear distinctions among the outputs.

We run a lot of Dell Optiplex desktop computers and Latitude portables. I've been using Linux Mint since version 12 successfully on desktops. We also use PowerBroker Identity Services Open (PBIS open, you may know it as Likewise open) for authentication againt a Windows Server 2008 R2 with active directory. This gives single-sign-on to file shares, central password management etc.
So now if I use Petra (version 16) and install on a Optiplex 9020 och Latitude E7440 (simple put, they are the latest generation of Intel hardware) it works fine with the local user account.
But if I log in with a windows domain account then Cinnamon will go into software rendering. Doesn't matter if I've already logged in with the local account and logged out/switched user or if the computer is freshly booted. Apart from consuming CPU resources we've seen severe graphis artifacts on the 9020 and some on E7440.
Note that the authentication software with Mint version 15 worked just fine.
I've doubled checked that on the login screen I choose "Cinnamon" as desktop environment for the session, not "Cinnamon (Software Rendering)". When I log in I get the warning balloon up in the right corner.

I also haveMint Petra MATE edition installed on a Optiplex 9020 here, which doesn't experience any troubles (but I don't know if MATE use hardware rendering).

I've created a second local account, logged in and directly logged out (it works fine). Then used an previously unused domain account and done the same. Checked and their home folders size differed only by a few dozen bytes.

Also, the Quit dialog (for shutting down the computer) lacks all buttons exception Cancel while using a domain account (also new problem in Petra). This affects MATE also. I've added the domain account to all the groups in /etc/group that the local account has. But this is not my primary concern.

Outputs:

inxi -Fx
Main difference is GLX Renderer

I've let the machines run the update manager so everything is up to date. I've also via synaptic upgraded to a newer kernel, 3.11.0-15-generic.

All machines are running 64-bit Mint.

Re: Cinnamon going to software rendering for some users

I tested to create another local account, log in, log out, rename the /home/local_username folder to /home/domain_user and change owner/group for the files and folders.
Still the same problem.

But in $HOME there is the .xsession-errors file, here it comes:
Fresh boot - logging in with a domain account (that is: getting software rendering)

I might put this problem aside for a while, I'm going to install MATE alongside so people can start using the computers (gets a little urgent for some).

Re: Cinnamon going to software rendering for some users

Postby Aqualize on Wed Aug 13, 2014 12:22 pm

A follow up.
I made a fresh attempt with Mint 17 Qiana and some more googling. Turns out the /dev/dri/card0 devicefile uses ACL and I guess it is meant to switch over to whoever user currently is logged on (other "switched users" don't have access?). Well somehow the domain users didn't get it (don't know if ACL is unsupported here).
The basic permissions hare read&write for user root and group video. Hence I added the specific domain user who's going to use the computer to the video group in /etc/group.
Not perfect but good enough for now.

Hi,

got into this kind of problems in the early stage of switching to BPIS and found this.
http://askubuntu.com/questions/452904/likewise-open-14-04-other-easy-way-to-connect-ad
People disagree with me. I just ignore them.
(Linus Torvalds, regarding the use of C++ for the Linux kernel.)

Please Add [Solved] to the topic-title of your first post when appropriate so others know they might find a solution here.
