Hello, I just installed Linux Cinnamon 17.2 and I have trouble doing something that is usually very easy. I can't create any links (or shortcuts) to folders and files for which I need a direct access from my desktop. I had no problem doing that on Mate but on cinnamon, the option doesn't show up when I the right-click menu. There must be a way to fix this...
PS: I know how to create a launcher to a program. My issue is only about shortcuts to folders and/or files

Re: How to put a link to a folder on desktop
Right click in Nemo the folder, for which you want to get the desktop link, and select to create a link. Now move this file into your desktop folder (and rename it, if you want). Done.

And if "Make Link" option is not available in the context menu (which wasn't available by default for me), then select the folder you wish, go to Nemo's Edit menu and click "Make Link" there.
Or go to Edit > Preferences, select "Display" tab and tick "Show all available actions in context menus (restart Nemo if you change this option)".

You can look it up under the package manager or synaptic
--Synaptic shows the list of installed file locations , and you would likely see it under /usr/bin or sbin etc etc.

Re: How to put a link to a folder on desktop
The question is, what did you install. A graphical program or a command-line (terminal) program. In the latter case you would have to run in a terminal. Simply typing in th name will do it in most cases.
For graphical programs there will be in very most cases automatically a menu entry get created. If you know the name you can enter it in the search box of the menu, otherwise you must manually search. But as long as you did not launch it the first time after installation, the menu entry for newly installed programs are set in bold - but only as long, as you do not log off.

As a late side note to this, you can also hold down the left Alt key whilst dragging the folder to where you want to create the link and choose "Make Link" from the context menu which pops up too.
