Installed nautilus, uninstalled nemo lost everything SOLVED

Post by russ553 »

Nemo was not showing my files the way I wanted in mint 17.1 Cinnamon, so I installed nautilus and then uninstalled nemo. Now I have only a mouse pointer on a black background and cannot get anything to show up on screen. I have tried terminal, cont-alt-t, and cannot get a terminal to open. Right click gets nothing.

I have tried multiple rebooting but still end up with nothing but the pointer.

How do I get Nemo reinstalled and get my desktop back?

Boot into Mint, then press Ctrl-Alt-F2.
Login, then enter the command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install nemo
When that is completed, reboot with the command:

Code: Select all

sudo shutdown -r now
I have never had to do this, personally, so I am not sure if there is more to it. But, if that works to get the desktop functional, then you can also install some additional components:
(This is all one command:)

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install eject librsvg2-common gvfs-backends nemo-fileroller gir1.2-nemo-3.0 libnemo-extension1 nemo-data nemo-emblems nemo-folder-color-switcher nemo-image-converter nemo-share python-nemo
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI

Nemo is a part of Cinnamon, the problem was predictable.

What did you want to reach, when you tried to switch to nautilus?

Did that, says it installed Nemo, then did "apt-get purge nautilus", says it uninstalled nautilus, did the shutdown, it rebooted and back to the same issue, mouse pointer on black screen.

I then tried the install of the additional files and it says cannot find them.

what now?

Should I now try to reinstall cinnamon?

Thanks for your effort.

Nemo was opening and showing the file and folder icons so small I could barely see them and I couldn't find any way to enlarge them and have it stay that way. I used to use nautilus all the time so thought i could just install that and everything would be dandy again. Nautilus was working fine so what use to keep Nemo, right? Well, I uninstalled it and now am in the condition I'm in.

Any idea how to recover from this?

Hello, russ553.

In a terminal window, try

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get --reinstall install mint-meta-cinnamon
Re-installing the Linux Mint Cinnamon meta package should pull in whatever is missing.

You can enlarge the size of the view in nemo with 2 methods: Either the slider on the right in the status bar or via menu or keyboard.
